The Permian Basin spans West Texas and southeastern New Mexico and is the most active oil-producing region in the United States. On the Texas side it divides into two principal sub-basins — the Midland Basin to the east and the Delaware Basin to the west — separated by the Central Basin Platform. Horizontal development across stacked pay has kept it the busiest permitting and completion area in the state.

Geology
The section is a thick Permian-age sequence of interbedded carbonates and organic-rich shales deposited across a deep marine basin flanked by carbonate shelves. Repeated cycles of basinal shale, debris flow, and shelf carbonate created the stacked, laterally continuous targets that make multi-bench horizontal development possible — operators commonly develop several benches from a single pad.

What is the difference between the Midland and Delaware basins?
They are the two sub-basins of the greater Permian, split by the Central Basin Platform. The Midland Basin sits to the east and is dominated by Spraberry and Wolfcamp development; the Delaware Basin lies to the west, is deeper, and adds the Bone Spring and Delaware sands to the target list.
Where does the data come from?
