Haynesville / Bossier Shale Map — Wells, Permits & Production
The Haynesville and overlying Bossier shales form a deep, high-pressure, high-temperature dry gas play across East Texas and into northwestern Louisiana. Wells are expensive and deep but deliver very high initial rates, and the play's proximity to Gulf Coast LNG export capacity has kept it strategically important to gas markets.

Geology
These are Upper Jurassic organic-rich marine shales deposited in a restricted basin above the Louann Salt and beneath the Cotton Valley section. Burial depth commonly exceeds 10,000 feet, producing the high reservoir pressures and temperatures that drive the play's strong initial rates — and the demanding casing, completion, and pressure-management programmes it requires.
Working the play
This is a depth-and-pressure play, so offset well behaviour matters. Use the map to review completion records and initial potential on nearby wells, track which operators are permitting, and forecast lease value from actual production history.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the Haynesville and the Bossier?
They are stacked Upper Jurassic shales, with the Bossier lying directly above the Haynesville. Operators target both, and acreage is often prospective for each, so the two are usually discussed and developed as a single play.
Which Texas counties are in the Haynesville?
On the Texas side the play centres on Harrison, Panola, Rusk, Nacogdoches, Shelby and San Augustine counties. The full list is below.
Is the Haynesville oil or gas?
It is a dry gas play. The section is thermally mature well past the oil window, so wells produce natural gas with very little associated liquids.
