Geology
The Eagle Ford is an Upper Cretaceous marine shale rich in organic material and notably high in carbonate, which makes it comparatively brittle and responsive to hydraulic fracturing. It thickens and deepens toward the Gulf, and that burial gradient is what produces the oil, condensate, and dry gas windows. The overlying Austin Chalk is frequently co-developed from the same acreage.
